Botanical Names of Psyllium : Plantago Ovata, Plantago Ispaghula
Description: Psyllium seeds is an agri-farm product of dried ripe seeds of plantago ovata forks (farm. Plantaginancae) and it has been cleaned free for all dust, agri farm fibers, wastes, mud, stones and iron particles.
Chemical Constituents: Mucilage mainly composed of arabinose, xylose, galacturonic acid, semi drying fatty oil and small amount of aucubin.

Psyllium Husk

Psyllium is a seasonal agricultural crop cultivated in India. Psyllium mainly in Husk and Powder form which is further processed and used in formulations and medical preparations by leading international pharmaceutical companies.

The Husk contains about 30% Muclage, mainly Xylose, Arabinose and Galacturonic Acid.

Pharmacological Action

Psyllium Husk contributes to mucilaginous property. The ucilaginous mass coats the mucous membrane and acts as demulcent, lubricant and protects the injured ulcerated surface for irritating bouts. Other parasite motile bacteria is enmeshed in the gel. Psyllium Husk is useful in the treatment of inflammatory affections by virtue of its emollient, demulcent and gentle laxative properties. The action of Psyllium Husk is purely mechanical, the fibres in it are not digested or absorbed by the body and have high affinity to water. When these fibres come in contact with water in the intestines, they swell and increase the bulk of material in the intestine as well as produce a gel that lubricates the bowel. Psyllium Husk can be used either alone or in combination with other laxatives.

Recent advances in the study of biochemistry and medicine have led to the opinion that the fibre content of our food plays an important role in the natural functioning of the body. Lack of dietary fibre leads to innumerable health disorders resulting in chronic headache, pyorrhoea, dental decay, obesity, appendicitis, polyps, constipation and other bowel disorders. Psyllium Husk Powder is a natural agent to provide sufficient dietary fibre to the fibre deficient diet. It is used in Ice Cream, Jams, Beverages, Bread, Biscuits, other baked food, instant noodles, waxy rice products, rice cakes and other dishes.
