CHLOROFORM

CHARACTERISTICS
Minimum 99.9%pure

PROPERTIES
Chloroform is a heavy colourless, non flammable, volatile (b.p.=61. 3°C) liquid miscible with organic solvents and slightly soluble in water with etheric odour. It finds use as industrial solvent and dissolves a wide range of organic compounds.

 

APPLICATIONS

  • Solvent in dye and perfume manufacture
  • Extractant for naturally occurring substances, such as penicillin, essential oils and alkaloids, especially nicotine.

STABILITY
Chloroform can be used in the presence of light and water with common construction metals upto 12°C. However, in the presence of air, especially air and light, even stabilized chloroform tends to develop acidity on continued use.

SODIUM CYANIDE (NaCN)

CHARACTERISTICS
Minimum 98.00% pure

PROPERTIES
Sodium Cyanide is pure white, highly poisonous highly soluble in water, odourless when dry solid, available in egg, granules or powder form.

The compacted egg form approximately weighs 6-7 gms. The powder and granules are free flowing having bulk density 0.7-0.8 kg/ltr and the particle size of grnules is between 2 to 5 mm.

REMARKS
Threashold limit value is 5 mg/M 3 (as cyanide dust) as recommended by ACGIH 1987-88.

STABILITY
Sodium Cyanide is stable even at fairly high temperature in the complete absence of Air, Carbondioxide and moisture. When heated in a dry CO2 atmosphere, sodium cyanide fuses without much decomposition. A brown black colour appears when water vapour and CO2 are present at temperatures of 100?C below the fusion point.

CARBON TETRACHLORIDE

CHARACTERISTICS
Minimum 99.9% pure free of sulphur

PROPERTIES
Carbon Tetrachloride is a heavy, colourless, non flammable liquid with moderately strong ethereal, non irritant odour and having boiling point 76.7°C. It is very slightly soluble with water but miscible with a large number of common organic liquids. It finds use as a powerful industrial solvent, azeotropic during agent, raw material for chlorofluorocarbon etc.
